Teaching a tiny robot the art of doing nothing
The little robot in our made-up lab had one job: water a basil plant. Every morning it checked the soil. Most mornings, the right answer was to do absolutely nothing.
Its first version watered on schedule and nearly drowned the basil. Its second learned to wait. The lesson was beautifully ordinary: a system that can act also needs a good reason to act. By Friday, the plant was thriving and the robot had become considerably less impressive to watch.
A schedule is a rough guess
The first watering rule seemed sensible: a small drink every morning. But sunshine, temperature, and the pot's drainage changed how quickly the soil dried. A fixed routine treated different mornings as though they were identical. The robot followed its instructions perfectly while the plant's leaves began to droop.
A sensor is not certainty
The revised robot checked soil moisture before opening its valve. Even that required care. A probe near the surface could report dryness while the roots remained wet. The fictional lab moved the probe, compared readings with a manual check, and recorded what changed. Measurement helped only after someone asked what the measurement actually represented.
Making restraint visible
The robot's status light originally turned green only after watering. On days when it correctly waited, it appeared idle or broken. The team changed the display to show the latest reading and explain the decision. Waiting became a visible outcome. The people watching it no longer felt the need to press the button just to make something happen.
A small lesson in automation
The basil experiment offers a modest design principle: define the circumstances that justify an action, and make it possible to see why those circumstances were or were not met. More activity does not necessarily mean more help. Sometimes the best evidence that a system is working is a healthy plant and an untouched watering can.
